The Ardbeg Distillery has been producing whisky since 1815 on the Inner Hebrides island of Islay. Its two centuries of history have been a roller-coaster of fortune, and are littered with claims to fame, including being the home of Scotland's first distilling sisters, Margaret and Flora – nieces of Ardbeg's original founder, John Macdougall – in the 1850s. By 1887, the distillery was producing in excess of a million bottles a year but a century later, the doors were closed as production dwindled to near nothing.
