Muscat de Frontignan, a town on the Mediterranean coast in Southern France, has long been famous for its high-quality Muscat wines, which were popular with such diverse figures as the French philosopher Voltaire and US President Thomas Jefferson. Called, Vin Doux Naturale, [van doo nah-tew-REHL] or “naturally sweet wine,” it is made from grapes that are high in natural sugar, whose fermentation is stopped by the addition of a neutral alcohol of no more than 10 percent of the volume.
