Chateau La Coste is the most exciting and progressive wine estate in Provence. Combining wine, food, art, architecture and hospitality it offers an enlightened and inclusive approach to fine wine. The property is owned by Irish hotelier Paddy Mckillen and his sister Maire who have created a paradise for wine and art lovers from all-walks-of-life. The gravity-fed winery, which looks like a pair of huge Nissan huts, was designed by the great French architect Jean Nouvel.
It comprises a marvellous underground cellar that keeps the wines naturally cool and the storage tanks out of sight! A beautifully situated sculpture park representing many of the world’s greatest modern and contemporary sculptors (Tadao Ando, Louise Bourgeois, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sean Scully etc) Alexander Calder, surrounds the vineyard. The estate has a wonderful luxury hotel, several restaurants for every budget and planned accommodation for back packers. Concerts at the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall are also organised during summer. The vineyards situated in an amphitheatre are beautifully managed and run along biodynamic principles.
The stylish rosé wines, based on grenache, syrah, cinsault and cabernet sauvignon are at the cutting edge of the Provençal aesthetic. They are modern, expressive, minerally and lovely refreshing styles. Chateau La Coste might not have the celebrity of Miravel or Whispering Angel, but it’s a wine project of great beauty, imagination and generosity of spirit.
