Stonehouse Quartz Block Barossa Valley Icon Shiraz 2016

(0)

Built in the late 1800’s, our cottage was the homestead for original family that established farmed this property. The property is situated south of the village of Marananga on the Barossa’s fames western ridge. The stone used to build the house was from an ironstone quarry right at the back of the property dug into the western facing hillside

The soil is rich with quartz and ironstone on top of a red clay loam and the house is made mainly from this same ironstone found throughout the vineyard.

The vineyard was first planted in 1992, to a mix of varieties. Since then these varieties have been refined down to just Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Stonehouse vineyard is divided up into specific sites to match the gradual changes in soil profile throughout the property.

Part of the philosophy of Stonehouse is to search out for other like-minded grape growers with vineyards that have old vines in other sub regions within the Barossa Valley. We have such vineyards that we source grapes from in Ebenezer, Greenock, Moppa and Hallet Valley. We often select small parcels of grapes from specific areas within these vineyards that reflect the flavours that we want.

All the wines are traditionally made with minimal intervention to preserve as much natural fruit purity as possible. This enables the wine to best reflect the vintage conditions of each year produced. Ferments are mainly whole berries; everything is gently basket pressed so the wines are soft and not heavily extracted. The wine, once pressed, is aged in a mixture of new & seasoned French and American oak for a minimum of 14-16 months. The percentage of new and old as well as French or American depends on the style of fruit that comes from each separate parcel of fruit from the various vineyards.

All these individual components are kept separate until prior to bottling when each barrel is selected that suits the style required within the range of wines that we produce.
