You have to admire Yalumba for backing themselves with Viognier. They have been the trailblazers with the variety in Australia, and the Virgilius has an almost cult following, and is seen as a benchmark for the style. Ripe apricots and assorted stone fruits leap out of the glass, along with a decent whiff of fresh ginger and some honeysuckle florals. The palate is fulsome and rich at 13.5% alcohol, with lush stone fruit flavours, a velvety honeyed mouthfeel and a decent zip of citrusy acidity cleaning up the long, sauntering finish. Great with spicy dishes, or butter-poached shellfish. White – Other Whites – Viognier
